The Suzuki Burgman Electric Scooter brings urban mobility to the next level
Two established two-wheeler brands, Bajaj and TVS, have entered the electric scooter segment. Honda has announced two new electric scooters for India next year. Yamaha also plans to launch an electric scooter at around the same time. By then, Suzuki will also have completed its first electric scooter.
There has been an exciting breakthrough developed by Suzuki Motor Corporation in the field of electric motorcycles: the e-Burgman. The first official images and specifications of the Burgman electric scooter have been released. Already spied on during tests in India, the e-Bergman is now entering an advanced testing phase in Tokyo.
Burgman’s electric scooter is part of a larger effort to promote battery sharing and increase e2W use in Japan. Suzuki is affiliated with Gachaco Co., Ltd. Together, a Tokyo-based battery-sharing service. Field tests will be conducted over three months from April 2023 to June and will include eight Burgman electric scooters. Suzuki Motor Corporation employees and applicants will participate in the field test. Tests help collect significant data from everyday activities such as commuting to work, school, and shopping. This data will be used to develop the Burgman Electric Scooter for production use.
Classified as a Class 2 lightweight electric scooter, it has impressive specs. The Suzuki e-Burgman can travel up to 44 km on a single charge at 60 km/h. The nominal power is 0.98 kW, the maximum power is 4.0 kW and the maximum torque is 18 Nm. Dimensions are 1,825 mm long, 765 mm wide, 1,140 mm high, and 780 mm seat height. The vehicle’s kerb weight is 147kg. It is powered by a synchronous AC motor and a lithium-ion battery.
Suzuki is part of the Electric Scooter Replaceable Battery Consortium, which includes Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. Belongs to Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. The consortium is working to standardize replaceable batteries and backup systems. A significant step toward battery sharing and electric motorcycle popularity in Japan. The common specification is derived from TP21003. Development criteria have been fine-tuned for removable batteries considering range and charging time. The consortium also collaborated with e-Yan OSAKA to conduct field tests aimed at popularizing electric scooters.
A standardized swappable battery-sharing service was established as a result of the collaboration, Gachaco, Inc. ENEOS, Honda, Kawasaki Motors, Suzuki, and Yamaha Motor have all partnered to offer a BAAS (Battery as a Service) solution. Electric scooters can travel long distances without worrying about battery power. To launch Gachaco services, the company uses Honda Mobile Power Pack e, which is widely compatible with most specifications.
Green drivers will have more transportation options as battery-sharing solutions become more accessible and reliable. The future looks bright as Japan’s Big 4 work together to spread electric scooter adoption not just in Japan, but around the world. The launch of the Burgman Electric Scooter in India is expected next year. At launch, it will compete with TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak, and the upcoming Honda Activa Electric. Suzuki Bergman’s electricity bill could be in the range of Rs 1.5 lakh.
