35% of Tiago EV sales come from the top 10 cities, 16% from the next 10 cities, and 49% from the rest of the country
The Tata Tiago EV is currently India’s most affordable 4-door electric hatchback with showroom sales prices ranging from Rs.869 lakh to Rs.12.04 lakh. Within a year of its launch, this compact hatchback electric car was a hit in small cities, accounting for up to 49% of total sales.
A total of 35% of Tiago EV’s sales come from the top 10 cities, according to the company. Also, the company earned 16% of sales in the next 10 cities and the remaining 49% in the rest of the country. Tiago EV performed better than Nexon EV in small cities like Satara, Bilaspur, Shimoga, and small towns in Kerala.
Nexon EV outperforms
People in smaller cities are opening their hearts to Tata’s more compact electric offerings instead of Nexon’s electric SUVs. This signals the potential for widespread adoption. Compared to its brother’s SUV, the Tiago EV has more market penetration, with about 50% of EV bookings coming from outside India’s top 20 cities.
The Tiago EV also appeals to first-time buyers. According to the company, 24% of buyers buy the Tiago EV outright without owning a car, to begin with. Additionally, nearly a quarter of shoppers are women (24%). This percentage is double the industry average for female shoppers.
Tata Motors has sold 15,000 Tiago EVs since deliveries began in February 2023. The electric hatchback has a range of 250 km for the small 19.2 kWh unit and 315 km for the large 24 kWh unit. About 56% of Tiago’s electric car buyers were under 40.
