Simple Energy Becomes India’s First OEM to Commercially Produce Heavy Rare Earth-Free Motors

Simple Energy Becomes India’s First OEM to Commercially Produce Heavy Rare Earth-Free Motors

Bengaluru, September 2025:In a historic milestone for India’s electric vehicle (EV) sector, Simple Energy has announced that it has become the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in India to commercially produce heavy rare earth-free motors for EVs. This achievement marks a major step forward in creating a self-reliant and sustainable EV ecosystem, reducing dependence on imported raw materials, and strengthening India’s position in the global clean mobility transition.

The motors have been developed entirely in-house at Simple Energy’s Hosur facility. The company has pioneered a new motor architecture that replaces conventional heavy rare earth magnets with optimized compound alternatives and proprietary algorithms. This unique combination ensures the motor delivers stable and high-performance output without the supply chain vulnerabilities associated with rare earth elements, which are largely imported and controlled by a handful of global suppliers.

Why This Breakthrough Matters

Rare earth magnets, particularly those containing elements like dysprosium and terbium, are a critical component in high-performance EV motors. However, they come with significant challenges:

  • Geopolitical Risks: Heavy rare earth materials are largely concentrated in specific regions, making global supply highly volatile.
  • Environmental Concerns: Mining and processing rare earths have major environmental impacts.
  • Cost Pressures: Import dependence drives up costs and exposes OEMs to market fluctuations.

By eliminating the need for these magnets, Simple Energy’s innovation directly addresses these issues, providing cost efficiency, sustainability, and independence from foreign suppliers.

Built for Performance and Scalability

The new motors have undergone rigorous validation, testing, and optimization to ensure they match — and in some cases exceed — the performance standards of conventional rare earth-based motors. The proprietary algorithms enable enhanced thermal management, torque stability, and improved efficiency across driving conditions.

Additionally, the in-house design gives Simple Energy greater control over customization, allowing the company to adapt motor specifications for a wide range of vehicles — from two-wheelers to larger EV platforms in the future.

Driving India Toward Atmanirbhar Bharat in EVs

This development aligns with the Government of India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) by building indigenous capabilities in critical EV technologies. By becoming the first OEM to commercialize such motors, Simple Energy sets a precedent for other Indian EV players and contributes to reducing the country’s import bill while boosting domestic manufacturing.

Commenting on the milestone, Simple Energy’s leadership emphasized that this is not just a technological leap, but a strategic move to future-proof India’s EV industry against global supply shocks.

What’s Next?

With commercial production now underway, Simple Energy plans to integrate these rare earth-free motors into its upcoming models, making them among the most sustainable and cost-efficient EVs available in the Indian market. The company is also exploring partnerships to license this technology to other OEMs, potentially positioning India as a hub for next-generation EV motor innovation.

This breakthrough not only strengthens India’s EV industry but also sets the stage for global leadership in sustainable electric mobility technologies.
