Railway Minister-Indian Railways to be fully electrified by next 2-3 years

To reduce the carbon footprint in the country by reducing the diesel trains running in the Indian Railways. Piyush Goyal, Minister of Railways and Commerce said that the Indian Railways will be electrified 100% by 2023. 




37,237 route kilometres of rail lines have been commissioned on electric traction as on 1 November 2019. The said number is 57.91% of total Indian Railways broad gauge network. Indian Railways is also planning to electrify remaining broad gauge (BG) routes.

Piyush Goyal in his tweet said, “to reduce the pollution levels from the country, Railways is continuously developing the electrification of whole railways in next two-three years.”
Prior to this, he also said that Indian Railways will become the world’s first net-zero carbon emitter by 2030.

“By 2030, we are working to make the Indian railways the world’s first net-zero railway. The Government is phasing out the old coal plants, which is going to help reduce environmental pollution, and will also create the demand for new plants and spur the investment cycle,” he had said while speaking at third India Energy Forum CERAWeek 2019 last month.

According to NITI Aayog data, the carbon emission from the Indian Railways was around 6.84 million tons in 2014.

13,687 kilometres railway tracks electrified by 2019

From 2009 to 2014 a total of 3,038 kilometres of railway tracks were electrified and from 2014-2019 it gained momentum and electrified total of 13,687 kilometres.




To speed up the electrification of railways line in India several steps have been taken including award of Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contracts, better project monitoring mechanism, delegating more power to field units for the award of contracts/sanction of estimates and close monitoring at the highest level.
