Prototypes of electric buses will soon be tested in Jammu

The arrival of a prototype electric bus in Jammu

“The prototypes of the E-buses (the model of a smart city development project), which were formed in August 2017, will be tested as soon as the SPV (special purpose vehicle) which was formed for the projects begins operations,” said an official of JSCL.

There has been delivery of a prototype electric bus model to Jammu Smart City Limited (JSCL), and the trial run of the vehicle is expected to begin shortly, an official told reporters on Tuesday. The twin capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar are slated to receive 200 electric buses under Smart City projects.

Besides providing, operating, and maintaining 100 electric buses, Tata Motors will supply, operate and maintain consumer technology solutions in Jammu and Srinagar, including electronic ticket printers (ETIMs), automated fare collection systems (AFCSs), platforms for mobile tickets and smart cards, and cloud hosting.

“The trials will start soon after the prototype (model of E-bus) is officially received,” said an official of JSCL, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) constituted in August 2017 for smart city development projects. He said these eco-friendly buses would begin operating after successful trials and feasibility studies of routes and other measures.

These electric buses are equipped with state-of-the-art features such as emergency buttons, tracking systems, video surveillance, stop request systems, and other safety-related features, officials said.

He said the process would also include setting up a mobility card-compliant digital ticketing solution that will be shared nationwide in both smart cities, which will eliminate paper tickets and enable contactless ticketing. It added that ticketing is greener.

“It will also play a significant role in ticket savings for agencies,” he said.

He also noted that through the mobile application, passengers could track bus operations, congestion, and ETA in real-time.
