Odisha Unveils EV Policy 2.0: Aims for 50% Electric Vehicle Registrations by 2036

The Government of Odisha has officially launched its Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0, setting an ambitious target to make 50% of all new vehicle registrations electric by the year 2036. With a forward-looking and inclusive strategy, the state is gearing up to become one of India’s most proactive regions in embracing sustainable and clean mobility.

✅ Policy Vision and Goals

The core objective of Odisha’s EV Policy 2.0 is to significantly reduce the state’s carbon footprint, improve air quality, and promote environmentally responsible transportation solutions. The policy outlines a clear roadmap that emphasizes:

  • Achieving 50% EV penetration in new vehicle registrations by 2036.
  • Promoting the adoption of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) across private, public, and commercial segments.
  • Strengthening EV infrastructure across urban and rural regions.

🚗 Incentives for Buyers and Industry Stakeholders

To drive adoption, the policy offers a host of financial and non-financial incentives:

  • Subsidies and exemptions on road tax and registration fees for EV buyers.
  • Capital incentives and interest subsidies for manufacturers and EV-related startups.
  • Support for retrofitting old vehicles with electric kits.

Additionally, fleet operators, ride-sharing platforms, and last-mile delivery companies are encouraged to switch to electric by availing fleet-focused benefits.

⚡ Charging Infrastructure Expansion

Odisha currently boasts 550+ public charging stations, and the policy aims to multiply this figure in the next few years. Key focus areas include:

  • Setting up charging stations every 25 km on highways.
  • Urban EV Zones with fast chargers and battery-swapping stations.
  • Incentivizing private and commercial charging station setups with land and power subsidies.

🛵 Support for Two-Wheelers, Three-Wheelers, and Buses

Recognizing the popularity of electric two-wheelers and e-rickshaws, the policy places strong emphasis on mass-market affordability and accessibility. Furthermore, the policy promotes:

  • Electrification of public buses through partnerships with OEMs.
  • Dedicated EV lanes and priority parking zones in key cities.
  • Integration of EVs in government fleets and institutional transportation.

🌿 A Step Towards Sustainable and Smart Cities

Odisha’s EV Policy 2.0 aligns with India’s broader vision for net-zero emissions and sustainable development. The initiative will not only reduce dependency on fossil fuels but also boost green jobs, innovation, and investment in clean technologies.

With this comprehensive and strategic roadmap, Odisha is poised to become a model state for electric mobility and a leader in the green transport revolution.
