MG Motor plans to increase investment in EVs-ZS EV
in 6 new cities
MG Motors India Pvt Ltd is planning to increase its investment in the electric vehicle space in India from 2022. The company believes that the present situation of Coronavirus pandemic will be normalised and in a few years the zero-emission vehicles will get traction in the domestic market on the long term basis said a senior executive.

MG Motor will launch an affordable electric vehicle in the range of ₹12-15 lakh which will qualify for the subsidy under the Indian government’s FAME or Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles scheme. It is also planning to launch a new variant of ZS electric vehicle that will come with a 500-kilometre range.
Not only this, but the company is also planning to increase its localization of components of electric vehicles and start assembling lithium-ion batteries and other critical components in India.
Rajeev Chaba, president, MG Motor India said, “This is our mid-term to a long term plan. We want to double our bets on electric vehicles in the medium to long term and want to be the leader (in the EV space). That’s why we will come with a battery with 500 kilometres range to show our intent.”
MG ZS EV
At present, the MG Motor has launched its electric SUV MG ZS EV recently in India. It will be available in five cities initially such as Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Bengaluru and later on in other cities. They are offering a special complimentary price for the first 1000 customers.
MG ZS EV is powered by a synchronous motor that gives 141 bhp and produces 353 Nm of peak torque. It is equipped with a 44.5 kWh battery pack which provides a range of 300 km on a single charge. It accelerates 0-100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and it gives a top speed of 140 km/h. Its lithium-ion battery can be charged up to 80 per cent in 40 minutes with the help of a 50 kW DC charger. It takes seven hours to charge it with a standard 7 kW charger. It is IP67 certified which means it is water and dustproof.
The internet electric SUV is coming with a price tag for pre-booked customers, for its excite version price is Rs 19,88,000 and for its Exclusive version, its pricing in Rs 22,58,000.
MG Motor India reported retail sales of 710 units in May
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, the MG Motor India reported retail sales of 710 units in May.
The company has commenced the production at its Halol manufacturing plant with around 30 per cent capacity utilisation, MG Motor India said in a statement.
About 65 per cent of its showrooms and service stations across India are made operational with reduced manpower, it added.
MG Motor India Sales Director Rakesh Sidana said, “supply chain disruption coupled with stricter credit financing along with non-operation of some dealerships due to the lockdown have impacted our sales in May.”
MG ZS EV in six new cities
The company said as part of its ‘Phase 2’ expansion plan, the carmaker is introducing the ZS EV in six new cities including Pune, Surat, Cochin, Chandigarh, Jaipur, and Chennai from June 2020. It will also expand the presence of the pure electric vehicle across 11 markets in India.
