A Mahindra XUV700 electric SUV was spotted testing in Chennai while it is being developed
In India, the EV revolution is making its way into the car market at a much faster pace than was expected. The top company is Tata Motors. In addition to launching electric versions of its flagship Harrier and Safari models, the company plans to expand its EV portfolio vertically. In addition to the Harrier EV, Mahindra will also offer electric versions of the XUV700.
Mahindra plans to launch five electric SUVs based on the upgraded INGLO platform. The company is testing it extensively and expects a market launch in 2024 or early 2025. So far, not all test vehicles have visual confirmation of electric drive. On their current test mule, they found the HV cables running under the floor where the battery is located.
Harrier EV & Safari EV rival Mahindra XUV700 electric test mule
Shortly after the test mule BE.05, the test mule XUV.e8 (electric XUV700) also appeared. This is an encouraging sign that Mahindra wants to launch them sooner or later. Electric vehicle competition is getting fiercer by the day. Kudos to car enthusiast Ram Prasath for sharing these updated spy photos. Our current test mule has an orange cable on the back. Automotive powertrains have color-coded cables. A blue wire means it carries about 36 V to 42 V, and an orange wire means that it carries up to 1000 V. Also called an HV cable (high voltage cable). Orange cables carry HV AC or DC power between chargers, inverters, motors, and batteries.
The XUV.e8 test mule has these in the rear, possibly indicating a rear-mounted single or dual-motor AWD setup. Born from VW, Mahindra’s INGLO platform supports both single and dual-engine layouts. Apart from that, we can also see an independent rear suspension. This increases rear occupant comfort. Independent rear suspension was offered on the Tata Indica and Indigo but is rarely seen outside of premium and luxury brands these days.
In the Mahindra XUV700 electric or XUV.e8, there will be three screens :
- One for instrumentation
- One for infotainment
- One for the front passenger.
When it launches, what will it contain?
The Mahindra XUV700 Electric or XUV.e8 will feature Volkswagen’s own MEB EV platform, renamed INGLO. It is a modular and scalable platform that can be adapted to a wide range of variations and applications. Mahindra has announced that the batteries will range in size from 60kWh to 80kWh and feature both single and dual motor configurations.
It offers all the advantages of the XUV700. We’re talking about ADAS technology, flush door handles, a five-star crash safety rating, a panoramic sunroof, a power driver seat with memory, and an extensive list of features. Mahindra’s XUV.e8 prototype in the UK features a free-standing three-screen layout on the dashboard, which will likely also make it into the production model.
No major design changes to the XUV.e8 body main structure are expected. Sheet metal body panels could take a wilder path than this one. The Mahindra XUV700 Electric could be priced at around Rs 30 million. The launch is scheduled for late 2024 or early 2025.
