Launch of the Dolphin compact EV by BYD in Japan

Launch of the Dolphin compact EV by BYD in Japan

BYD offers the Dolphin in Japan after the Atto 3 for around $24,570

Chinese NEV maker BYD has introduced its second passenger car, the Dolphin compact EV, in Japan following the Atto 3. It represents yet another significant step in the company’s commitment to providing sustainable transportation solutions to its customers.

BYD is now selling the Dolphin in Japan, available in standard range and long-range versions. The starting prices are ¥3.63 million ($24,570) and ¥4.07 million respectively.

The car is available in two versions: the base model with a 44.9 kWh battery pack and a range of 400 km, and the long-range version with a 58.56 kWh battery pack and a range of 476 km.

The BYD Dolphin was released in China on August 29, 2021, and has three versions available on its domestic market. The starting prices for the versions are RMB 116,800 ($16,013), RMB 123,800, and RMB 136,800 respectively.

The BYD Dolphin in China has a length of 4,125 mm, a width of 1,770 mm, a height of 1,570 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,700 mm.

The company offers the model with slightly different dimensions in Japan: 4,290 mm in length, 1,770 mm in width, 1,550 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,700 mm.

Yesterday, BYD announced its new venture into Japan’s passenger car market. They introduced three battery electric vehicles (BEVs) named the BYD Seal, Dolphin, and Atto 3. Interestingly, the Atto 3 is called the Yuan Plus in China.

BYD announced that it would sell its cars in Japan through a network of dealers instead of directly operated stores, citing the familiarity of the former with Japanese consumers.

On January 31st, BYD initiated the sale of their electric vehicles in Japan. The first model available for purchase is the Atto 3, which carries a price tag of 4.4 million yen. It’s worth noting that the Seal model hasn’t been released for sale in Japan yet.

BYD plans to achieve its previously stated goal of opening over 100 showrooms in Japan by the end of 2025.

The company reported that it sold 274,386 NEVs in August, an increase of 56.87% over last year and a 4.66% increase over July.

From 18,169 NEV sales in July to 25,023 in August, BYD experienced a 37.72 percent increase.

The Dolphin sold 32,745 units in August, up 39.52 percent year-on-year and 2.49 percent from July, and was the fourth best-selling BYD model last month.
