Contrary to initial predictions, its battery capacity could range from 60 to 80 kWh
As for reinvention, Mahindra apparently knocked it out of the park at the recent Futurescape event in South Africa. Following the unveiling of the next-generation tractor and the Global Pick-Up concept, the Indian automaker unveiled the Mahindra Thar electric SUV concept.
INGLO platform for Mahindra Thar Electric
Dubbed Thar.e, the concept represents the Chakan-based carmaker’s vision of future off-road vehicles. More importantly, the all-electric Thar will be based on the INGLO P1 platform, rather than the usual frame-to-frame ladder. It will be available in both 3-door and 5-door versions.
Notably, the INGLO platform will underpin future models such as the Bolero.e, Scorpio.e, and XUV.e, in addition to the Born Electric lineup launched last year in the Kingdom. Older brother. For the uninitiated, a skateboard platform, with a dead battery hanging between the wheels. The updated INGLO P1 platform has been designed specifically for off-road vehicles with higher ground clearance, and greater approach and departure angles by keeping front and rear overhangs to a minimum. Ideally, an electric SUV will have an overhang of 680-740mm in the front and 640-680mm in the rear, with a wheelbase of 2775-2975mm.
Design for Mahindra Thar Electric
The Mahindra Thar.e concept takes a tall, upright stance from its fossil fuel cousin. It has all the solid design cues of the Thar, but intelligently discards the old strengths associated with the CJ and replaces them with more futuristic ones. Some visual highlights like the square dimensions, square fenders, flat panels, and exposed hinges on the doors add solid appeal to the off-roader’s look.
It has a modified front end with a pair of square headlights and is flanked by a rectangular pseudo-rectangular grille with three LED bars. The side panels are accentuated by massive wheel arches with a thick paint job covered with all-terrain tires. At the rear, the Thar.e has a hinged trunk, containing a spare tire and square LED taillights.
The electric powertrain for Mahindra Thar
Mahindra has yet to reveal anything about the Mahindra Thar.e’s powertrain, but it’s likely to sport a larger battery to match its off-road capabilities. It was recently revealed that Mahindra would initially source engines and batteries from BYD for its upcoming electric SUVs. However, the engine for the all-electric Thar is expected to come from Volkswagen.
While Mahindra hasn’t revealed a specific launch schedule yet, with the launch dates of the upcoming XUV and BE SUVs, we suspect that the all-electric Thar launch will only happen after 2026.
