India’s EV Two-Wheeler Market Sees Major Shake-Up in February 2025: Bajaj Takes the Lead

The Indian electric two-wheeler (E2W) market witnessed a major shift in February 2025, with Bajaj Auto emerging as the market leader for the first time. The industry, which has been dominated by startups like Ola Electric and Ather Energy, is now seeing increased competition from established automotive giants. According to Vahan registration data as of February 28, Bajaj Auto sold 19,290 units, surpassing its competitors and marking a significant milestone for the company.

Top 10 Electric Two-Wheeler Sales in February 2025

Based on Vahan registration data up to February 28, 2025, here are the top 10 electric two-wheeler manufacturers by sales volume:

Rank Manufacturer Units Sold
1 Bajaj Auto 19,290
2 TVS Motor Company 17,405
3 Ather Energy 10,723
4 Ola Electric 7,963
5 Greaves Electric 3,243
6 Hero MotoCorp 2,455
7 Okinawa 1,800
8 BGauss Auto 1,500
9 Wardwizard (Joy) 1,200
10 Okaya EV 900

Key Takeaways from the February 2025 Sales Report

Bajaj Auto Takes the Lead

Bajaj Auto emerged as the top-selling electric two-wheeler manufacturer, selling 19,290 units. This surge in sales is largely credited to its extensive distribution network, with the Chetak model being available across nearly 700 showrooms nationwide. The company’s pricing strategy, offering models in the ₹95,000 to ₹135,000 range, has made it a preferred choice for consumers.

TVS Motor Company Secures the Second Spot

TVS Motor Company recorded 17,405 units in sales, maintaining a strong market presence. The popularity of its iQube electric scooter has contributed to this success, supported by an expanding dealership network and aggressive marketing strategies.

Ather Energy Holds a Steady Position

Ather Energy secured the third position with 10,723 units sold in February. The brand continues to attract premium customers with its high-performance models, such as the Ather 450X, known for its superior technology, fast-charging capabilities, and connectivity features.

Ola Electric Faces a Setback

Ola Electric, which led the market in previous months, slipped to the fourth position with 7,963 units registered. The company attributed this decline to a change in its vehicle registration process during February, which temporarily impacted reported numbers. However, Ola claims to have sold over 25,000 units during the month, indicating that its actual sales performance remains strong.

Greaves Electric Mobility Gains Traction

Greaves Electric Mobility outperformed Hero MotoCorp and climbed to the fifth spot with 3,243 units sold. The company’s Ampere brand has been steadily gaining traction, especially with the launch of the Ampere Magnus Neo, an upgraded model priced at ₹80,000.

Hero MotoCorp Lags Behind

Despite being one of India’s largest two-wheeler manufacturers, Hero MotoCorp registered only 2,455 units in February. The company is still in the early stages of ramping up its electric vehicle operations and expanding its distribution network.

Okinawa, BGauss Auto, Wardwizard, and Okaya EV Make the List

Okinawa (1,800 units), BGauss Auto (1,500 units), Wardwizard (1,200 units), and Okaya EV (900 units) secured the final spots in the top 10 list. While their sales figures remain lower compared to the market leaders, these brands continue to serve niche segments with budget-friendly and commuter-focused electric scooters.

Market Trends and Future Outlook

Price Sensitivity and Government Policies

The Indian E2W market remains highly price-sensitive, with customers actively considering government subsidies and incentives before making a purchase. The recent revision in the FAME-II subsidy scheme has impacted consumer sentiment, making pricing strategies more crucial than ever.

Expansion of Charging Infrastructure

One of the key challenges hindering rapid E2W adoption is the lack of widespread charging infrastructure. However, companies like Ather, Ola, and TVS are investing heavily in expanding charging networks to address this issue.

The Rise of Legacy Manufacturers

Legacy manufacturers such as Bajaj and TVS are making significant strides in the electric vehicle space, leveraging their strong dealership networks, brand trust, and after-sales service capabilities. Their dominance in February’s sales report indicates a shift in market dynamics where traditional manufacturers are competing aggressively with startups.

Conclusion

The electric two-wheeler industry in India is witnessing rapid transformations, with Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor Company leading the way. While newer players like Ola Electric and Ather Energy continue to innovate, the market is becoming increasingly competitive. With government support, technological advancements, and increasing consumer awareness, the E2W segment is poised for sustained growth in the coming years.
