India’s Electric Car Market Accelerates: March 2025 EV Sales Overview

India’s electric vehicle (EV) market continues to gain momentum, with the latest data for March 2025 showcasing promising growth in the 4-wheeler EV segment. As per statistics from the Vahan Dashboard (updated as of April 2025), sales figures highlight key performances by top manufacturers across the country. The data has been collated from 1,378 out of 1,438 RTOs spanning 35 out of 36 states and union territories.

Top Performers in March 2025

  1. Tata Motors – 4,710 Units Tata Motors continues to dominate the Indian EV market with a significant lead, selling 4,710 electric vehicles in March alone. Its well-established presence and wide EV portfolio have solidified its position as the market leader.
  2. MG Motor – 3,888 Units MG Motor India maintained a strong second place with 3,888 units sold. Their focus on stylish, feature-rich EVs has resonated well with urban buyers.
  3. Mahindra & Mahindra – 1,944 Units Mahindra & Mahindra secured the third spot with 1,944 units. Known for its rugged design and growing EV range, Mahindra is emerging as a major player in the electric space.
  4. Hyundai Motor – 849 Units Hyundai sold 849 units, leveraging its popular models like the Ioniq 5 and Kona Electric to attract premium and mid-range EV customers.
  5. BYD India – 396 Units Chinese EV manufacturer BYD continues its gradual growth in India with 396 units. Their focus on commercial and high-end electric vehicles is helping them carve a niche.
  6. BMW India – 250 Units BMW’s luxury EVs contributed to 250 unit sales, indicating a steady demand for high-end electric vehicles in metro cities.
  7. Mercedes-Benz India – 170 Units Another premium automaker, Mercedes-Benz, clocked 170 units, continuing its push in the luxury electric mobility segment.
  8. PCA Automobiles India – 46 Units Peugeot’s Indian arm, PCA, reported 46 unit sales, reflecting their modest but ongoing presence in the EV market.
  9. Volvo – 46 Units Volvo matched PCA’s numbers with 46 units, largely supported by their hybrid and electric SUV offerings.
  10. Kia India – 24 Units Kia, despite its strong performance in the ICE vehicle segment, is yet to make a major impact in the EV market, selling only 24 units in March.

Conclusion

March 2025’s data paints a clear picture of growing EV adoption in India, led by domestic manufacturers like Tata and Mahindra. While luxury carmakers are seeing modest but steady growth, companies like MG Motor and Hyundai are bridging the gap with mid-premium offerings.
