Honda Delays Electric Motorcycle Launch in India, Focuses on E-Scooters First
In a strategic move that underscores its calculated approach to electrification in India, Honda has confirmed it will not launch electric motorcycles in the immediate future , instead concentrating solely on electric scooters like the Activa e: and Q1 for both Indian and select export markets.
Despite Honda’s global commitment to introduce 10 new EV models by 2025 , the company’s Indian lineup will remain scooter-centric for now. The rationale? According to Honda executives, Indian market conditions and consumer preferences heavily favor electric scooters over motorcycles at present. This cautious approach reflects Honda’s intent to align product offerings with actual demand rather than speculative trends.
To bolster its EV footprint, Honda has announced plans to set up a dedicated electric two-wheeler manufacturing facility near Bengaluru by 2028 . While this plant will eventually produce modular battery-powered motorcycles , such models are only expected in a later phase of development .
In the interim, Honda aims to expand its electric scooter range , invest in battery-swapping infrastructure , and roll out enhanced aftersales and care packages to support its EV customers. These efforts are designed to establish a strong foundation before the brand transitions into the electric motorcycle segment.
For now, fans awaiting electric versions of Honda’s iconic motorcycles will have to wait, as the company sharpens its focus on dominating the EV scooter space and building a scalable, sustainable ecosystem for future innovations.
