Greaves Cotton & Chara Tech Join Forces for Sustainable Motor Innovation

April 2025 — In a significant stride toward sustainable and innovative mobility solutions, Greaves Cotton Limited, a leading engineering company with a long legacy in powertrain and mobility solutions, has announced a strategic partnership with Chara Technologies, a pioneering deep-tech startup specializing in the development of rare-earth-free electric motors and intelligent controllers.

As part of this collaboration, Greaves Cotton will exclusively manufacture Chara’s proprietary synchronous reluctance motors (SynRM) and motor controllers. The manufacturing and assembly operations will be conducted at Greaves’ state-of-the-art facility located in Shendra, Aurangabad, a key industrial hub in Maharashtra. This partnership not only supports India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative but also marks a pivotal move in localizing advanced electric motor technology for both automotive and non-automotive sectors.

Driving Innovation with Rare-Earth-Free Technology

What sets Chara’s technology apart is its rare-earth-free magnet design, which eliminates the need for expensive and environmentally taxing rare-earth materials commonly found in conventional electric motors. Instead, these motors utilize advanced synchronous reluctance technology, which allows for:

  • Higher energy efficiency by minimizing electromagnetic losses
  • Lower cost of production due to the absence of rare-earth materials
  • Increased supply chain security by reducing dependency on volatile global rare-earth markets

This approach not only improves overall sustainability but also aligns with global trends focused on cleaner and greener manufacturing processes.

Wide Range of Applications

The motors and controllers developed under this collaboration are designed to cater to a broad range of applications. These include:

  • L5 Category Three-Wheelers: Commonly used for commercial last-mile delivery and public transport.
  • Golf Carts: Frequently employed in hospitality, real estate, and recreational environments.
  • Four-Wheelers: With growing electric vehicle (EV) adoption, these motors are well-suited for low-to-mid-range passenger EVs and light commercial vehicles.

By addressing both automotive and non-automotive segments, the partnership broadens its impact, catering to diverse mobility needs across urban and rural landscapes.

A Step Forward in India’s EV Ecosystem

This collaboration is seen as a major boost to India’s electric vehicle ecosystem, with both companies bringing complementary strengths to the table. Greaves Cotton’s decades of manufacturing excellence and deep distribution networks, combined with Chara Technologies’ cutting-edge motor and controller technology, create a compelling synergy.

Speaking on the partnership, industry analysts view it as a “win-win,” accelerating the commercialization of clean, indigenous electric powertrain technologies that meet global performance standards without the associated environmental costs of rare-earth mining.

Toward a Greener, More Independent Future

As the EV market in India and across the globe continues to mature, innovations like synchronous reluctance motors are expected to play a key role in making electric mobility more efficient, affordable, and sustainable. With this partnership, Greaves Cotton and Chara Technologies are not just addressing the technological challenges of today but are laying the foundation for the next generation of electric powertrain systems.

In the long term, this collaboration reflects a shared vision to decarbonize transport, strengthen India’s manufacturing capabilities, and promote energy independence through cutting-edge innovation.
