Govt Unveils ₹10,900 Cr PM E-DRIVE Plan for 72,300 EV Charging & Battery-Swap Stations
The Government of India has officially rolled out guidelines for setting up 72,300 EV charging and battery-swapping stations across the country under the ambitious PM E-DRIVE scheme , with a massive budget outlay of ₹10,900 crore. This initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, strengthen the nation’s charging infrastructure, and boost confidence among EV users.
As per the new framework, the government has announced 100% subsidy for EV charging and swapping stations set up on government premises, ensuring maximum deployment at public offices, educational institutions, and administrative complexes. For semi-public locations such as airports, metro stations, and fuel outlets , subsidies will range between 70–80% , making them highly attractive investment spots for private operators and public sector undertakings.
The Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has been designated as the nodal agency to implement and monitor the rollout. BHEL’s technical expertise, coupled with its pan-India presence, is expected to bring scale and efficiency to the scheme.
Special focus has been placed on smart cities and national highways , where the government aims to ensure reliable, fast-charging access for both passenger and commercial EVs. With this, the initiative is expected to bridge major gaps in charging availability, address range anxiety, and strengthen India’s push towards cleaner mobility.
The scheme is not only a significant step toward achieving India’s EV30@30 target (30% of new vehicle sales to be electric by 2030), but it also aligns with the nation’s net-zero emission goals . By enabling large-scale deployment of EV charging and battery-swapping infrastructure, the government hopes to encourage both individual buyers and fleet operators to transition from fossil fuels to electric vehicles.
Industry experts believe that the PM E-DRIVE scheme will create new opportunities for technology providers, manufacturers, and service operators, while also generating thousands of jobs in installation, operation, and maintenance of the charging ecosystem.
With a clear roadmap, high subsidies, and strong government backing, India’s EV infrastructure landscape is set for a transformative leap forward.
