Here is the story of two brothers, the founders of Enigma Automobiles who make Enigma e-rickshaws and Electric scooters. Anmol Bohre (29) and Alankrit Bohre (26), are computer science engineers. They started EV manufacturing business, Enigma Automobiles in October 2015. Initially, they started building e-rickshaws in a small farmhouse in Bhopal.
To get the electrical components for EVs, Anmol and Alankrit searched extensively in the streets of Delhi. After three months of severe hunting, the brothers finally caught a few vendors in Delhi, Hyderabad, and Ludhiana. The brothers then zeroed on a deal with a Delhi company which sourced lithium cells from China.
Enigma e-rickshaw
After successfully outsourcing the manufacturing of battery packs and constructing a network of component suppliers, Enigma started assembling them in its farmhouse. They priced the e-rickshaws between Rs 80,000 and Rs 1,30,000.
Later, the brothers moved out of the farmhouse and rented their uncle’s 20,000 square feet manufacturing facility in Mandideep, Bhopal. From there, Enigma started manufacturing four variants of passenger e-rickshaws and two loader e-rickshaws.
Enigma got good response and grocery delivery companies like Bigbasket were started purchasing their three wheelers. Individuals who wanted to make a living by driving the e-rickshaws were also became a big part of Enigma’s customer base.
Enigma Electric Scooters
In 2017, Enigma reached Rs 1.2 crore mark regarding revenues. On seeing this success, the brothers decided to manufacture electric two wheelers. So, in 2018, they launched three electric scooters, Ambier, Crink and GT450 which are priced between Rs 49,000 to Rs 75,000.
This year, they have already crossed Rs 80 lakh worth sales and they are on track to reach Rs 1.3 crore by March.
Batteries
The Ambier, Crink, and GT450 come in two variants each, one with lead acid batteries and the other with lithium ion. The battery life of lithium ion is five times greater than that of lead acid. These electric scooters can be charged at home or at charging stations. The lithium ion variants take three to four hours to recharge completely whereas the lead acid batteries take six to seven hours.
The Ambier scooter comes with battery swapping technology. The Crink and GT450 are also come with battery swapping, but it is optional. The customer has to ask them before and then they incorporate it.
Enigma’s electric scooters’ range on a full charge is based on the kind of battery used. Some batteries give a range of 70 km and some offer 140 km.
The company is now planning to set up charging stations at petrol bunks to make charging points more accessible to customers.
Being a B2B business, they are recognized among industry networks and associations. But retail and the end customers don’t know them by name. They are trying to build their brand through the electric two-wheeler products. Soon, they also plan to enter the electric bikes segment.
