DGT and Shell India Launch Green Skills & EV Training Initiative to Empower India’s Youth for a Sustainable Future

New Delhi, 12 June 2025 — In a landmark move to bolster India’s transition to a green economy, the Directorate General of Training (DGT) under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), in partnership with Shell India, has launched a comprehensive Green Skills and Electric Vehicles (EV) training program. This initiative, to be implemented by the Edunet Foundation, aims to empower students and faculty across key regions with industry-aligned, future-ready skills in green energy and e-mobility.

The program is being rolled out across selected Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) in Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, beginning June 12, 2025.

Multi-Tiered Training for Impact

Under this DGT–Shell India initiative, training will be delivered through a multi-tiered approach:

  • Advanced EV Technician Course: A 240-hour course at 4 premier NSTIs.
  • Job-Oriented EV Skills Course: A 90-hour module offered at 12 Shell-supported ITIs.
  • Foundational Green Skills Module: A 50-hour introductory course in additional ITIs without physical labs.

The curriculum, co-developed by Shell, Edunet Foundation, and DGT, includes in-depth modules on EV systems, battery technology, diagnostics, digital tools, and safety protocols. To ensure quality delivery, over 250 trainers will undergo Training of Trainers (ToT) programs. Participants will receive co-branded certifications from DGT and Shell India, alongside structured placement assistance to boost employability.

State-of-the-Art EV Skill Labs

A cornerstone of this initiative is the establishment of specialised EV skill labs at select ITIs and NSTIs. These labs will serve as training hubs offering hands-on learning, access to real-world tools, and expert-led sessions that mirror current industry practices.

Alignment with India’s Green Growth Vision

This partnership aligns with the Government of India’s broader vision to accelerate green energy adoption and EV deployment. National schemes like FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles), along with progressive state policies from Delhi, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, are driving the surge in EV demand and infrastructure. These efforts are creating a substantial need for a skilled green workforce, which this initiative directly addresses.

Leaders Speak on the Initiative

Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Charge), MSDE and Minister of State for Education, remarked:

“Our collaboration with Shell India reflects the government’s deeper commitment to aligning skilling with sustainability. Green energy and electric mobility are not just environmental imperatives—they are economic opportunities. We are equipping young Indians with the skills to lead the green revolution.”

Smt. Trishaljit Sethi, Director General, DGT, MSDE, emphasized:

“This program brings cutting-edge curriculum and infrastructure into vocational training. With EV technologies integrated into ITIs and NSTIs, we are ensuring that students receive hands-on, industry-relevant training that boosts their job readiness in the green sector.”

Mansi Madan Tripathy, Chairperson, Shell Group of Companies in India & Senior VP, Shell Lubricants Asia-Pacific, stated:

“Shell is proud to contribute to a lower-carbon future by enabling youth with the skills needed in green energy. Our collaboration with DGT and Edunet Foundation ensures practical, future-ready training that supports India’s net-zero ambitions.”

Shaping India’s Climate-Ready Workforce

This visionary collaboration marks a significant stride in building a climate-ready workforce. By integrating real-world experience, certification, and job placement support, the initiative empowers India’s youth to be at the forefront of the global green economy, leading not only in participation but in innovation and impact.
