Cambridge University students built a highly efficient Electric Car, called Helia.  The electric car utilizes very small amounts of power which is required to boil a kettle. Helia, which is a four-seater electric car can cover a range of 900 kilometres, which is double the range offered by Tesla 3.

The Cambridge University Eco Racing (CUER) student society built the four-seater car, named Helia. They mainly focused on the efficiency. Their aim is to produce a car which can travel 80 kilometers per-hour by using only 2500 watts, which is equivalent to power required to boil a single kettle. On comparing, Cambridge University team points out that the Tesla Model 3 requires eight kettles worth of power to deliver the same output, whereas the Volkswagen e-Golf needs nine and the BMW i3 requires nine and a half.

On a single charge, Helia can cover a range of 900 kilometres, which is equivalent to the distance from London to Edinburgh. When compared to the Tesla 3, the Cambridge University team’s car offers double the range on a battery a quarter of the size. The ability to cover this distance is due to Helia’s chassis and body panels made from carbon fiber. The kerb weight of Helia is 550 kilograms.

“Currently there is a lot of news about the decline of the UK’s automotive industry, but working with our partners has shown us that there is a very strong network of automotive companies,” Zhang said.

“Many of our partners are world leaders in automotive engineering, research and development, and high-value manufacturing but are not necessarily household names,” he added.
