BYD to Set Up EV Car Factory in Telangana, Boosting India’s EV Future

This initiative follows BYD’s earlier proposal in 2023 to invest $1 billion in partnership with Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL) to set up an EV and battery manufacturing plant in India. Although the initial proposal was not approved by the Indian government, BYD has continued its efforts to enter the Indian market. 

MEIL’s subsidiary, Olectra Greentech, has an existing partnership with BYD for producing electric buses in India. Olectra has successfully deployed various models of electric buses nationwide and plans to expand its product line to include electric tippers, trucks, light commercial vehicles, and three-wheelers. 

The establishment of BYD’s manufacturing facility in Telangana is expected to create substantial employment opportunities and bolster the state’s industrial landscape. Moreover, local production could lead to more affordable EV options for Indian consumers by reducing import duties. Currently, BYD imports vehicles from China, resulting in higher prices that have impacted sales.

The Telangana government has demonstrated a strong commitment to promoting EV adoption through policies such as a 100% exemption of road tax and registration fees for all categories of electric vehicles, valid until December 31, 2026. These incentives aim to accelerate the transition to sustainable transportation within the state.

If realized, BYD’s entry into Telangana could be a game-changer for India’s EV sector, introducing advanced technology, fostering local partnerships, and enhancing the country’s position in the global EV market.
