Introducing Krutrim AI, the Indian alternative to ChatGPT
Ola’s CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has announced the launch of his latest project, Krutrim AI. A hybrid event was held online to announce the project, which is billed as India’s first artificial intelligence project. In Sanskrit, Krutrim means “artificial”, and Aggarwal claims that the model is capable of understanding 20 Indian languages and is capable of generating content in 10 Indian languages, including Marathi, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Odia.
The announcement of Krutrim AI was made by Aggarwal on X (formerly Twitter). During the video address, he invited attendees to Krutrim AI’s launch, which puts the power of artificial intelligence in the hands of 1.4 billion people. Viewers were able to access the video live on the Krutrim YouTube channel or in the embed below starting at 2:30 PM today.

In his statement, Aggarwal said that India must become a global leader in artificial intelligence.
“AI models are currently primarily trained in English, but language is more than just text. According to Aggarwal, language serves as a vehicle for cultural values, context, and ethos, and current AI models simply cannot capture our multicultural, multilingual heritage, knowledge, and aspirations.
Aggarwal believes that there are very few times in history when a technology comes along that can have a profound effect on the economy and culture, making us the most productive and efficient economy on the planet.
According to the words of Aggarwal, as a result of an AI-first economy, the Indian technology industry will be pushed on a nonlinear path and become a Global Knowledge Centre. It is also expected that an AI-first economy will lead Indian research and development, and that (Krutrim) artificial intelligence will serve as a tool for cultural expression rather than assimilation into one global paradigm. That vision inspired me to introduce Krutrim today.
Krutrim: What’s it all about?
Known as Krutrim, this large language model (LLM) was developed by Ola using information from more than 2 trillion tokens, which are sub-words used in conversation. Aggarwal acknowledged that Krutrim was still in its infancy, but he demonstrated the AI model by writing stories, poems, and more in several Indian languages.
With Krutrim, individuals and businesses will be able to enjoy a wide range of benefits.
“Approximately 2 trillion tokens were used to train this model, which features many innovations in the architecture. During the demonstration, Ravi Jain, Ola’s CMO, stated “This LLM has the largest representation of data used for training ever and will provide the right balance between performance and price, making it suitable for most database applications.”
Furthermore, Krutrim Pro will soon be launched, which will be a multimodal AI model containing more sophisticated capabilities for problem-solving and task execution.
The release of Krutrim Pro is scheduled for the next quarter.
Aggarwal has always believed that artificial intelligence has the potential to serve as a powerful force for the assimilation of cultures. India must possess an artificial intelligence system, pointing out that many popular language models are based on data from countries other than India.
Krutrim supports more Indic languages than even GPT-4, according to its developers.
