Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari , has once again emphasized the urgent need for standardization of EV charging systems across the country. As India pushes towards a greener, all-electric future, the minister highlighted that interoperability and convenience in charging infrastructure are not just desirable—they are critical for the sustainable growth of the electric mobility ecosystem.
Today, the EV industry in India is experiencing rapid expansion, with multiple OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) introducing electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, and commercial vehicles. However, the lack of uniform charging protocols has emerged as a major roadblock. Currently, different manufacturers deploy their own charging technologies, leading to confusion for customers, higher infrastructure costs for operators, and a fragmented EV ecosystem.

With India targeting ambitious goals of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 and cutting down its dependence on fossil fuels, the move towards uniformity in charging systems is seen as a crucial step. Experts believe that much like the standardization of mobile charging ports (USB Type-C), a unified EV charging ecosystem will democratize the industry, making it more accessible and cost-efficient.
The minister’s call comes at a time when countries like China, the US, and members of the EU have already made significant progress in establishing common charging standards. By adopting a similar approach, India can ensure that its EV growth story is both scalable and sustainable .
