This clarification follows a series of media articles suggesting that BYD intended to invest approximately $10 billion to develop a production facility near Hyderabad. These reports indicated that the Telangana government had proposed three potential sites for the plant, all located near Hyderabad, and that BYD representatives were evaluating these locations. However, BYD has now refuted these claims, emphasizing that no concrete plans have been made.
Despite its presence in India through its subsidiary, BYD India, which focuses on electric buses and passenger vehicles, the company has yet to establish a domestic manufacturing facility. Currently, BYD imports electric vehicles from China, leading to high import duties that increase prices and limit market penetration. A local production unit would significantly reduce costs, potentially boosting sales and enhancing BYD’s competitiveness in India’s growing EV market.
Over the past two years, BYD has explored options to build a manufacturing plant in India. However, regulatory restrictions on Chinese investments have posed challenges. In 2023, the Indian government rejected a $1 billion investment proposal jointly submitted by BYD and its local partner, Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL), to establish an EV manufacturing plant. The proposed facility in Telangana, with an estimated investment of ₹8,200 crore, underwent review by multiple ministries before the proposal was ultimately declined.
While BYD continues to expand its footprint in international markets such as Southeast Asia, South America, and Europe, it has not announced any large-scale manufacturing ventures in India. The company’s recent denial underscores the absence of finalized plans for establishing a production facility in the country.
