India is laying out the welcome mat for electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers from around the globe, but according to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, the country won’t be rolling out a special red carpet for Tesla.
This announcement comes after Tesla requested a reduction in import tariffs on its electric vehicles. Currently, India imposes a 70% customs duty on imported cars priced below $40,000 and a steeper 100% duty on those exceeding that price tag. Tesla argued for a concession to make its vehicles more affordable in the Indian market.
Minister Goyal, however, emphasized that India’s EV policy aims to create a level playing field for all-electric vehicle manufacturers. The government is focused on developing a robust EV ecosystem that will attract various global players, not just Tesla. While companies are free to make their demands, India’s policies will be formulated to benefit the entire EV industry, not specific companies.
This stance indicates that India is prioritizing the development of its domestic EV manufacturing capabilities. By creating a competitive environment, the government hopes to encourage companies to set up production facilities in India, boosting job creation and technological advancements within the country.
