India’s first geared electric two-wheeler was originally scheduled for September 2023
It has been confirmed that Matter, a start-up producing electric two-wheelers (E2W), has been forced to extend the delivery date for its first product, the Aera electric motorcycle, until 2024. Deliveries of the Matter Aera were originally scheduled to begin in September, but will now begin between January and March of next year. No explanation has been provided by the start-up for the delay in the delivery of products to customers. Over 40,000 units of the Aera have been pre-booked and will be delivered by the end of 2024. As the company’s demand increases, it plans to ramp up production from 60,000 units to 120,000 units at its Gujarat plant.
For the 5000 variant, the Aera retailed for Rs 1.44 lakh, and for the 5000 Plus variant, for Rs 1.54 lakh (ex-showroom). As a result of its large 5 kWh battery pack, the Aera originally provided the full Rs 60,000 incentive. A government-revised subsidy structure for electric two-wheelers known as FAME-II has since been implemented, and Matter had to increase the price of the Aera since it has yet to sell a single motorcycle. This means the Aera now costs Rs 1.74 lakh (5000) and Rs 1.84 lakh (5000 Plus, ex-showroom). It should be noted, however, that Matter has previously confirmed that it will sell the bike at launch price to all customers who have pre-booked.
It is the only electric motorcycle in the country that features a four-speed sequential manual transmission and has been designed and developed entirely in-house by Matter. There are four variants of the Aera, all of which share a fixed five kWh lithium-ion battery pack (using either NMC or NCA chemistry cells). All variants of the Aera feature liquid cooling – another first for an Indian electric vehicle. With a maximum power output of 14 horsepower, the Aera is claimed to have a range of 125 kilometers in real-world conditions.
The Aera will feature an onboard charger that is capable of charging the bike to full capacity in less than five hours. Matter claims that the Aera will also support DC fast charging, with a charge time of less than two hours. It is anticipated that Matter will add two other variants to the Aera 5000 and 5000 Plus, which may include a larger battery of 6 kWh. Matter also intends to enter the motorcycle segment in the coming year, which is a more accessible segment.
Upon its eventual arrival, the Aera will be competing with the Tork Kratos R, the Oben Rorr, and the Revolt RV400 for the title of most advanced electric motorcycle available today.
