Maruti unveils its first electric car at Japan Auto Show: Suzuki eVX

Suzuki revealed the updated version of its eVX electric vehicle concept at the Japan Auto Show on Wednesday. The EV concept was first showcased by Maruti Suzuki’s partner in India as its first-ever electric car, set to launch within the next two years. The model presented in Tokyo features several design changes compared to the one displayed at Auto Expo 2023 earlier this year. For the first time, Suzuki offers a glimpse of the interior and provides details on the battery and range of the vehicle.

The eVX EV concept, which was unveiled at the Japan Auto Show, has undergone some changes. It now features redesigned alloy wheels, LED headlights, and DRLs with a triangular motif, as well as larger wheel arches and connected tail lamps. The electric vehicle concept has an overall length of 4,300 mm, a width of 1,800 mm, and a height of 1,600 mm.

According to Kinji Saito, Director and Senior Managing Officer of Global Automobile Marketing at Suzuki Motor Corporation, the company has announced that it will commence mass production of its electric SUV by the end of 2024. Production will start worldwide by then. Maruti Suzuki had previously confirmed that the eVX will be available on Indian roads by 2025.

The eVX concept is expected to come with a dual motor setup and Suzuki’s advanced 4×4 technology. According to Suzuki, the upcoming electric car has a range of over 500 kilometers on a single charge. While Suzuki has not shared many details about the car yet, it is speculated that it will be based on the same platform as Toyota’s bz3X electric concept vehicle.

The eVX’s interior boasts a futuristic design language that perfectly matches its electric powertrain. The dash is sleek and modern, with a large free-standing digital dual-screen that serves as both the infotainment system and driver display. Currently, the screen is one whole unit without any segregation, but it’s expected to be split when the eVX goes into production.

Apart from the large screen, the two-spoke steering wheel is also noteworthy for its yoke-like design and minimal mounted controls that are touch-controlled. There are several touch-controlled buttons located right behind the steering wheel on the dashboard for various features like climate control, menu control, hazard light switch, and more.

The center console of the car has a round rotary knob that is used to select different gearbox modes. The gearbox itself is located in the middle of the console. The AC vents are designed vertically, and the door handles feature ambient light patterns and touch-based controls.
