Tata Motors EV family is now 1 lakh strong

1 lakh EVs sold by Tata Motors; 50,000 sold in 9 months

With a strong position as the Indian market leader in electric passenger vehicles, Tata Motors has announced that its all-time electric vehicle (EV) production has surpassed 1 lakh units. The automaker says the most recent 50,000 electric vehicles have been produced in the past nine months alone. Currently, Tata Motors is the only Indian automaker to offer an all-electric powertrain with three different body styles in the passenger car space: sedan (Tiago EV), hatchback (Tigor EV), and SUV (Nexon EV). Tata also sells the Xpres-T, which is a repurposed Tigor EV for fleet buyers. Currently, Tata’s trams are sold for between Rs 8.69 lakh and Rs 19.29 lakh (all prices, excluding showrooms, excluding state subsidies).

While announcing the milestone, Tata Motors CEO Shailesh Chandra recalled the beginning of Tata Motors’ electric vehicle journey, which began with the tender for Energy Efficient Services Limited (EESL) initiated by the Indian government, leading to the creation of the original Tigor EVs. In 2018, Tata launched 100 electric vehicles per month. It took Tata 44 months – just under 4 years – to cross the 10,000 electric vehicles mark. By 2023, this has increased to 10,000 EVs per month; 100 times more absorption capacity.

This rapid increase was catalyzed by the arrival of the Nexon EV in 2020. Based on a capable small SUV, the Nexon EV has firmly established itself – and its maker, in the process – as India’s top choice for electric vehicles. The Nexon EV represents a significant number of all-electric vehicles Tata has sold to date, and its momentum has been further boosted with the introduction of the improved Tigor EV in 2021 and the Tiago EV in 2022. The Tiago EV was, at the time of its launch, India’s most affordable electric vehicle and was in high demand. Tata also recently became the first passenger vehicle company to receive an automotive PLI certificate in the four-wheeler category from ARAI for the Tiago EV.

Tata emphasizes the importance of supporting state electric vehicle subsidies. In Maharashtra, before the subsidy, Tata sold about 100 electric vehicles per month, but when the state subsidy (reaching Rs 2,500,000/car) was implemented, this number increased to 950 units per month. After the subsidy ended, monthly sales in the state reached 700 units, but they played an important role in building confidence in electric vehicles and promoting their use.

The company estimates that the Indian electric vehicle market will reach one million units per year by 2028, with 20% of all passenger vehicles sold being equipped with battery powertrains. To achieve this goal, Tata said the country needs a wide range of electric vehicles to choose from, extensive (and easily accessible) charging infrastructure, and ongoing government support in the form of subsidies for electric vehicles that account for 20% of all passenger car sales.

Tata Motors previously announced plans to launch 10 new electric vehicle models by 2025. These will include several models scheduled to launch within the next 6 to 8 months, including the Harrier EV, Punch EV and coupe-SUV Curvv.
