Thar EV could use Mahindra’s INGLO platform or ladder-frame chassis as an alternative
There is no doubt that Mahindra’s global event is going to be one of the most smashing events of this year which will take place as soon as possible. It is scheduled that the event will take place in South Africa on August 15th, 2018. New passenger and commercial vehicles are expected to be exhibited.
News has surfaced regarding the imminent reveal of the Scorpio N pickup concept. It has also been announced that Mahindra will showcase a futuristic concept edition of the Thar, equipped with a fully electric powertrain.
How far can Mahindra Thar Electric go?
There is much speculation about the Thar EV concept’s advanced features. It has been suggested that the vehicle could crab walk or steer, allowing all four wheels to turn at a 45° angle. This feature would prove highly beneficial for off-roading and could also help park the SUV in tight spaces.
Additionally, the Thar EV could perform a 360° turn whenever necessary, making it an attractive option for those seeking adventurous experiences. Another exciting aspect of the Thar Electric is the possibility of a quad-motor setup. This would provide more exhilarating drives than the current ICE-based Thar 4×4 with its dual-motor setup.
Platform options for Mahindra Thar EV
Mahindra has recently disclosed that it is exploring the feasibility of producing electric vehicles with ladder-frame construction. This platform type could significantly benefit the company’s existing commercial vehicle line. The Thar model’s ladder-frame design could be utilized for the electric version, resulting in lower development and production costs with minimal modifications required to incorporate the electric powertrain.
Despite the preference for monocoque setups in electric vehicles due to their lightweight and spaciousness for the powertrain and passengers, some automakers have introduced body-on-frame EVs, such as the Ford F-150 Lightning. Ladder-frame electric vehicles offer several advantages, including increased load capacity and enhanced towing power.
The launch date for Mahindra Thar EV
At this point, it remains unclear when the Thar EV will be released. However, the Scorpio N pickup is expected to debut in 2025. The Thar EV has the potential to become a highly sought-after option, given the immense popularity of the Thar and the significant performance boost that an electric powertrain can provide. Additionally, advanced features may further enhance its overall appeal. Mahindra is expected to provide more detailed information about the Thar EV during its unveiling on August 15th.
