The double-decker electric bus is now going to hit the streets of Mumbai.
SWITCH Mobility Limited, delivered the first series of SWITCH EiV22s at Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) in Mumbai. The first delivery was for its 200 electric double-decker buses ordered by BEST, the most prolific double-decker bus operator in India for over 70 years.
The SWITCH EiV 22 is the first air-conditioned two-stage electric bus designed, developed, and manufactured in India using SWITCH’s world-class electric bus expertise. The SWITCH EiV 22 features cutting-edge technology, state-of-the-art design, maximum safety, and first-class comfort features.
Among India’s largest bus fleets, BEST operates the largest fleet of 410 buses in India. The bus transport service covers the entire city and extends its operations outside the city limits into neighboring urban areas. It serves a population of 16 million in the MMR region, BEST Daily Ridership has more than 35 lakhs.
To achieve the vision of “shared, clean and connected mobility”, BEST had undertaken several commuter-centric initiatives during the last one and half years to make City Bus Service – reliable, efficient, passenger-friendly, climate-friendly, and sustainable. In the course of operating these electric buses, BEST had already built 700 MW of solar energy from SECI (Solar Energy Corporation of India). Other initiatives such as digital buses (100% tap-in-tap-out functionality) live bus tracking mobile apps, bus congestion status, and digital tickets have improved the commuter experience and reliability.
During the last year, the number of daily ridership had increased from 22.5 lakhs to 35 lakhs, making the bus operation more financially sustainable. SWITCH’s electric double-decker buses feature a lightweight aluminum body structure with advanced architecture, capable of carrying almost twice as many seated passengers as comparable single-Decker buses, but with less curb weight. Increased by just 18%. With a contemporary design and comfortable interior and exterior, the electric double-decker features wide front and rear doors, two staircases, and an emergency door in compliance with the latest safety standards.
