EV buyers exempt from registration certificate fees, renewal charges
There’s big news for electric vehicles buyers, they no need to pay fees for the issuance or renewal of the registration certificate of their vehicle. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has announced all battery-operated vehicles are hereon exempt from ‘the payment of fees for the purpose of issue or renewal of registration certificate’. This initiative is a part of encouraging and promoting the adoption of electric vehicles in India. Also, there will be no charges imposed for the assignment of a new registration mark for an electric vehicle.
The MoRth tweeted on its official Twitter handle “MoRT&H has issued a notification dated 2nd August 2021 to exempt Battery Operated Vehicles from the payment of fees for the purpose of issue or renewal of registration certificate and assignment of the new registration mark. Recently, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRT&H) had issued a draft notification that proposes the exemption of battery-operated electric vehicles (BOV) from the payment of fees for the purpose of issue or renewal of Registration Certificate and assignment of the new registration mark.
The Ministry had invited comments and suggestions from the stakeholders on the issue. In this regard, Rule 81 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 will be amended.
In February 2021, The Minister of Road Transport & Highways and MSMEs Nitin Gadkari had called for adopting an integrated approach for developing indigenous fuel cells in the field of electric vehicles. He urged scientists academia and industry to harness hydrogen-based energy. He said this energy is cost-effective and can be easily found in India. He indicates lowering the costs of solar power in India which can help energize other modes of fuels.
He Said, NITI Aayog has collaborated with four IITs including Guwahati and Delhi for research in aluminum-ion batteries. He informed that nearly 81 percent of li-ion battery components are available locally resulting in the employment generation at larger scales.
The Minister emphasized a lithium-ion battery. He said India’s mining entities could look for acquiring component assets globally and grab the opportunity as there is still 49 percent scope in this field.
