Gujarat government announced electric vehicle policy 2021

To promote the adoption of electric vehicles in the state, Gujarat’s Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has announced the Gujarat Electric Vehicle Policy 2021.

The new Electric Vehicle Policy 2021 will be implemented for the next four years. The government of Gujarat aims to have two lakh electric vehicles in the state in the next four years. The policy aims to make Gujarat a hub for e-vehicles and various materials related to it.

Highlights of EV policy

  • Increase in the use of e-vehicles in the State in coming 4 years

  • Currently, 278 charging stations are available in the State for the charging of e-vehicles. Infrastructure for new 250 charging stations to come up, which takes total tally to 528
  • Petrol pumps will be given approval for establishing charging stations
  • Charging facilities to come up at housing and commercial infrastructures
  • E-vehicle registered at Gujarat RTO will be exempted from the registration fee, within four years, fuel worth 5 crore rupees will be saved
  • Minimum 6 lakh ton CO2 emission will be reduced
  • Subsidy up to Rs 20,000 for 2 wheelers, Rs 50,000 for 3 wheelers and up to Rs 1.5 lakh for 4 wheelers will be directly  credited to bank accounts through DBT
  • Gujarat will give double the amount of subsidy than any other state for e-vehicle per kilowatt
  • Gujarat government will encourage and give subsidy to e-vehicle purchasers along with benefits from the Government of India’s Fame -2 scheme to encourage e-vehicles.

The state information department tweeted, “With an aim to witness 2 lakh electric vehicles on the roads of Gujarat in next 4 years, Chief Minister Shri Vijay Rupani declares Gujarat Electric Vehicle Policy 2021.”

The state government will subsidize electric vehicles on a per kW basis. Under the new Gujarat EV policy, the state government aims to strengthen the demand for battery-powered vehicles by providing buyers with incentives. There will be capital incentives for EV charging infrastructure developers as well.

  • Four-wheelers will get a subsidy of 1.5 lakh
  • The electric bike is getting a subsidy of Rs 20,000
  • The e-rikshaw will get a subsidy of Rs 50,000

Rupani hopes that the new EV policy will help at least 1.25 lakh electric two-wheelers, 75,000 e-rickshaws and 25,000 electric cars to roll out on state roads. The state-owned Energy Efficiency Services (EESL) will launch an aggregate demand for 300,000 electric three-wheelers across a variety of user segments.

The Ministry with EESL aiming for aggregation of demand for the remaining e-buses on an OPEX basis. It will now target cities with over 4 million population, i.e. Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, etc.

The state government will provide a subsidy of Rs 10000/kWh compared to Rs 5000/kWh provided by other states. The total subsidy outlay for the scheme is Rs 870 crores. The state has also decided to waive off registration fees for all-electric vehicle buyers.

Naveen Munjal, MD and CEO of Hero Electric and President of the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles welcomed the Gujarat government’s new electric vehicle policy.

The state of Gujarat has received approval for 278 charging stations under the FAME II scheme. The State government is aiming to increase 250 more stations and a capital subsidy of 25 per cent in the limit of Rs. 10 lakhs provided for the purpose. In the coming days, it will have a network of 528 charging stations said Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
