Turkey to invest $3.7 billion to produce EVs

Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan unveiled last week a couple of all-electric vehicle prototypes that will launch TOGG, a new state-supported automotive enterprise. It first compact SUV is expected to launch by 2022. An investment of $3.7 billion will enable the output of about 175,000 EVs a year.

The brand is called turkey’s Automobile Joint Venture Group (TOGG). The consortium was established by 5 industrial groups such as Anadolu Group, BMC, Kok Group, mobile phone operator Turkcell, and Zorlu Holding, the parent of TV maker Vestel.

TOGG’s CEO is former Bosch Executive Gurcan Karakas. The company’s COO is Sergio Rocha, who is the former CEO of General Motors Korea.

The vehicles are expected to have a range of 186 miles with 200 horsepower motor in a rear-wheel-drive configuration. dual-motor, the all-wheel-drive 400-hp variant could provide up to 300 miles on a single charge.

The single motor RWD model will go from 0-62 mph in 7.6 seconds whereas dual-motor version will take 4.8 seconds from 0-62 mph.

The vehicles include a crossover SUV and sedan and which comes with a DC Quick-Charging up to 150 kilowatts.

This car will be sold domestically says the group and plans to turn TOGG into an international brand. Its factory will be established in Bursa, a manufacturing hub. The factory will complete in 2021 and is expected to provide jobs to 4,300 people.

Apart from this, major automakers including Fiat-Chrysler, Ford, Hyundai, Renault, and Toyota are currently producing or assembling vehicles in Turkey. TOGG plans to offer 5 different models over the next 15 years.
