Tata Altroz EV Faces Launch Delay Due to Ground Clearance Issues
Tata Motors has once again postponed the launch of its much-awaited Altroz EV, citing critical issues related to battery packaging that are affecting the vehicle’s ground clearance. Originally showcased in 2020, the electric version of the Altroz premium hatchback was expected to become a strong contender in the compact EV segment. However, engineering challenges are now pushing its market entry further into the future.
At the heart of the delay is a problem with the battery pack’s placement, which has led to a ground clearance of just 145mm—well below the average required for Indian roads. The battery is positioned on the floor to maintain a low center of gravity and stability, but this design significantly compromises the car’s ability to handle speed breakers, potholes, and uneven terrain commonly found across India.
This technical hurdle is particularly concerning for Indian buyers, who prioritize practicality and durability in their vehicles. As a result, Tata Motors is now reworking the battery integration within the Altroz’s existing ALFA platform to find a safer and more functional solution.
Tata Motors acknowledged the delay and stated that they are focused on delivering a product that meets Indian road conditions without sacrificing performance or comfort.
“We are actively working to address the ground clearance issue caused by battery placement. Our priority is to provide an EV that delivers on safety, practicality, and comfort—core aspects that Indian customers expect,” said a Tata spokesperson.
The company added that while delays are unfortunate, they are essential to ensure long-term reliability and customer satisfaction.
This delay comes at a time when Tata Motors has firmly established itself as a leader in the Indian EV space, with the Nexon EV, Tiago EV, and Tigor EV seeing strong sales. The Altroz EV was expected to expand the brand’s electric footprint into the premium hatchback category.
However, repeated postponements could allow rival manufacturers like Hyundai, Mahindra, and Maruti Suzuki—all of whom are ramping up EV plans—to gain ground in this growing segment.
While Tata Motors has not provided a new timeline for the Altroz EV’s launch, industry insiders suggest the company is unlikely to release the model until a ground clearance solution is found that does not compromise vehicle safety or electric range.
Despite the setback, Tata Motors continues to invest heavily in electric mobility. Upcoming models like the Curvv EV, Sierra EV, and Harrier EV are being built on newer EV-first platforms that aim to avoid such design limitations. Tata’s focus remains on maintaining its dominant position in the market through innovation, engineering, and customer-centric design.
Summary:
The Tata Altroz EV’s launch has been delayed again due to ground clearance issues caused by battery packaging. Tata Motors is working on a solution and remains committed to offering a safe and high-performance EV for Indian roads, although no revised launch date has been confirmed.
