Trying to boost sales, Tesla offers free supercharging for six months

Tesla's new Supercharger V3

Tesla has now announced that all Model 3 and Model Y orders that are delivered by the end of the year in North America will receive six months of free supercharging for the life of their vehicle.

As we approach the end of the quarter, Tesla is gearing up to do another “end of the quarter push,” an attempt to boost sales before the quarter and year comes to an end.

As of now, it is offering another incentive for new buyers, free supercharging, in addition to a discount on its new vehicle inventory of up to $3,000 as well as a discount on its used vehicle inventory.

Those who purchase a Model 3 or Model Y by December 31, 2023, will receive six months of free supercharging.

A company statement states that customers who purchase a new Model 3 or Model Y by December 31, 2023, will be able to take advantage of 6 months of free Supercharging. In addition, Tesla does not guarantee that vehicles will be available or delivered by December 31, 2023. There is a limitation on the transfer of promotions to other vehicles, persons, or orders, even if you transfer ownership. There is an exclusion from this promotion for used vehicles, business orders, and cars used for commercial purposes (such as taxis, rideshare companies, and delivery services). This promotion may change or end at any time, and it cannot be combined with any other Tesla promotion. The terms and conditions apply. A Tesla vehicle may be disqualified from receiving free Supercharging if it is overcharged. Tesla retains the right to do so at its sole discretion.

We have previously seen Tesla be a little capricious regarding benefits like these, so we should take any wiggle room it gives itself with some skepticism. The most interesting restriction is Tesla’s statement that it can remove your benefit “if you charge excessively.”

Historically, Tesla has offered this incentive as part of its end-quarter pushes as a standard “demand lever.” As part of the current offer, Tesla is offering the transfer of unlimited free supercharging from vehicles that still possess the legacy benefit by the end of the year to new vehicles.

It was a difficult quarter for Tesla, as both revenue and earnings were below expectations. Therefore, it is seeking incentives to boost sales at the end of the year.

The Model 3 and Y lease prices were slashed at the beginning of this quarter by Tesla, who also announced that the Model 3 will lose half of its US federal EV tax credit by year’s end.

In addition to these good reasons, there is also the competing incentive that the much-improved Model 3 Highland should be available in North America at the beginning of next year, so some buyers might wish to wait for the new and most modern Model 3. That does not apply to the Model Y, which will not be updated anytime soon.

EV owners benefit from free supercharging incentives since they can compare it to their current monthly gas bill and anticipate significant savings – even though most EVs charge at home for less than gasoline. A few months of free supercharging can be a great bonus for those who do not have access to charging at home or have yet to figure out their charging situation when they purchase their EV.

The other nice thing about it is that it is an easy and low-cost way for Tesla to get people into its store, which is great.

Nevertheless, we would suggest that Tesla should try the tried-and-true method of not having your CEO loudly spread Nazi conspiracy theories as another way to incent people to buy your cars, instead of attempting the easy, low-cost method of not having your CEO loudly spread Nazi conspiracy theories. Perhaps it is worth a shot, even if it sounds a little crazy, to try it out.
