Delhi Extends Electric Vehicle Policy: EV Policy 2.0 in the Works

The Delhi government has extended its Electric Vehicle (EV) policy for another 15 days, paving the way for a revamped EV Policy 2.0. This move reaffirms the city’s commitment to sustainable transportation and reducing vehicular emissions. The draft for the new policy is already on the table, bringing exciting incentives and regulations aimed at accelerating the shift toward electric mobility.

Key Highlights of Delhi’s EV Policy Extension:

1. Subsidies for Electric Two-Wheelers

The government is continuing its subsidy program, offering ₹5,000 per kWh of battery capacity, with a maximum incentive of ₹30,000 for electric two-wheelers. This move is aimed at making EVs more affordable and encouraging widespread adoption.

2. Incentives for E-Rickshaws and E-Carts

To promote sustainable last-mile connectivity and reduce reliance on fossil-fuel-based vehicles, the policy includes a direct ₹30,000 incentive for e-rickshaws and e-carts. This will support small business owners and transport workers who rely on these vehicles for their livelihood.

3. Boost for E-Cycles

Recognizing the need for micro-mobility solutions, Delhi’s government is offering a 25% subsidy on electric cycles, with a cap of ₹5,500 per unit. This initiative is expected to encourage more people to adopt e-cycles for short commutes and deliveries, reducing congestion and pollution.

4. Focus on Electric Buses and Phasing Out ICE Vehicles

Delhi aims to transition a significant portion of its public transport fleet to electric. The policy outlines steps to increase the number of electric buses, further reducing dependency on internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

5. Mandatory EV Charging Infrastructure

In a bid to improve accessibility to EV charging, the policy mandates charging infrastructure in both new and old buildings. This regulation ensures that existing residential and commercial complexes provide facilities to support the growing number of EV users.

6. 100% Transition to Electric Garbage Fleet by 2027

In an effort to decarbonize municipal services, the policy includes a commitment to fully transition Delhi’s garbage collection fleet to electric vehicles by 2027. This will contribute to reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality in the city.

A Step Toward a Greener Delhi

The extension of the current policy and the introduction of EV Policy 2.0 reflect Delhi’s unwavering commitment to sustainable mobility. These measures are expected to drive increased EV adoption, reduce pollution, and make Delhi a model city for electric transportation in India.

With financial incentives, infrastructure mandates, and a clear focus on public and private electric transport, Delhi is accelerating toward a cleaner, greener future. The success of this policy could inspire other cities to follow suit, reinforcing India’s larger vision of achieving a sustainable transportation ecosystem.
